I feel bad for Mike Pence. Poor man, assigned seating next to the biggest microphone hog in existence, the most unruly and inflammatory of all Presidential attention whores in the history of our humble republic, and all he got was a stupid ride on Air Force 2? Sharing the stage with a larger-than-life 140-character demagogue, the mild-mannered, spartan-haired VP has now been thrust into a new role: punching bag.
Triangulated by the Trump camp into demonstrating his undying devotion by joining the election fraud exposure crew, Pence nevertheless has a political career to consider (ie, 2024) and he must retain every sliver of legitimacy which is, in itself, a great challenge having been Trump’s second-in-command for 4 years. Pence either plays the oddball Trump/Wood/Powell desperation game in which every stone is overturned until dirt is the only prize remaining, or he publicly rebukes the demented team’s aberrational strategy, thus hopping to the “other side” and shrugs the embers of Trump’s Presidential aspirations off with a very high-profile smirk.
The far Right is already crucifying the guy.
Vice President Pence on Thursday asked a federal judge to reject a bid by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and other Republicans to broaden Pence’s powers in a manner that would effectively allow him to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral win.
The lawsuit, filed earlier this week, seeks to expand Pence’s role in an upcoming Jan. 6 meeting of Congress to count states’ electoral votes and finalize Biden’s victory over President Trump.
But in a Thursday brief to Texas-based U.S. District Judge Jeremy Kernodle, a Trump appointee, Pence said he was not a proper defendant to the suit.
“A suit to establish that the Vice President has discretion over the count, filed against the Vice President, is a walking legal contradiction,” a Department of Justice attorney representing Pence wrote in the filing.
The hate is palpable. I suspect Mike Pence will take the high road because that is what the political establishment does, or those seeking to thrive off the establishment.
Mike is that kinda guy.
